The grottoes are one of the three major grotto groups in China with the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang in Gansu and the Longmen Grottoes at Luoyang in Henan. They are one of China's great historical wonders. The Yungang Grottoes were started during the period of the Northern Wei Dynasty in around 453.
Then we will return to the center of the city to visit the Nine Dragon Wall and Huayan Temple. The Nine Dragon Wall was formerly the front screen of an imperial palace. This glazed-brick structure has nine dragons sculptured in relief in five colours. The screen is 45.5 metres long metres high, and 2 metres thick.
Also known as South Temple, Shanhua Temple is on the western side of south street in Datong. First constructed in the Tang Dynasty(618-907), this temple is famous for its ancient architectures.
  • Day3

Hanging Temple, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Datong to Pingyao

    • Breakfast, Lunch
    • in Pingyao
In the morning we will tranfer you to visit Hanging Temple. This temple was built on the face of a cliff at Jinlongkou at the foot of Hengshan Mountains. It dates from the late Northern Wei Dynasty about 1, 400 years ago. Its forty halls and pavilions were built along the contours of the cliff, supported by its natural hollows and outcroppings. Using the technique for building a plank road around the face of a cliff, the builders set cross beams paved with timbers and stones and supported by posts resting on the outcroppings. A visit to this breathtaking structure is an awe-inspiring experience.
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the oldest and tallest wooden pagoda in China. Built in A D. 1056, it is a sixty-seven-metre-high octagon with a diameter of thirty metres at the base. From the outside it appears to be a five-storied structure, but since it has four additional inner stories it is actually a nine-storied structure. A rational, well-proportioned structure, the pagoda has withstood gunfire and earthquakes. Items of interest, in the pagoda include statues and frescoes.
Today we will reach Pingyao at night.
